The Kingdom of the Winds is an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) that Nexon officially launched on April 5, 1996. Based on Kim Jin's manhwa The Kingdom of the Winds, it lets many people hunt and adventure together in a world with the feel of the Three Kingdoms period, centered on Goguryeo.

The game is regarded as the starting point of Korean online games. In September 2010 it entered the Guinness World Records as "the world's first commercial graphical MMORPG," and in April 2026 it celebrated its 30th anniversary of service. Korean Wikipedia describes The Kingdom of the Winds as the oldest graphical MMORPG still in service.

In this post, we cover how The Kingdom of the Winds was made, how it's played, why it's considered a classic, the influence it left on later Korean games, and how to play it today.

Origins

A World Drawn from a Manhwa

The original manhwa The Kingdom of the Winds is a historical epic set in East Asia around 18 to 23 AD. It weaves together the conquests of King Daemusin (Muhyul), son of Goguryeo's second king Yuri, with the love story of his son Prince Hodong and the Princess of Nangnang. The game built its world on this war story.

From a 1994 Plan to a 1996 Launch

According to the timeline on Korean Wikipedia, planning for The Kingdom of the Winds began in December 1994, it went through a beta test on December 25, 1995, and it began official service on April 5, 1996. In November of the same year, it also started a free service through the internet platform "iWorld."

A Development Team That Led to Lineage

Song Jae-kyung took part in the early development of The Kingdom of the Winds. Song later designed Lineage at NCSoft, and according to English Wikipedia, Lineage's server software was forked from The Kingdom of the Winds' server software. In other words, two of the games that define Korean online gaming came from the same roots.

Gameplay

Four Classes

The Kingdom of the Winds has four base classes: Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and Poet. Based on the English description, each class's features can be summarized as follows.

ClassFeatures
WarriorMelee attacker with the ability to spread attacks across multiple monsters
RogueAttacker with the ability to turn invisible
MageCan paralyze monsters, making it good for solo hunting
PoetHandles the most powerful healing magic as well as buffs for allies and debuffs for enemies

Each class branches into more specific paths, and once you reach a certain level, you can choose one of three alignments symbolizing death, balance, and life.

The Four Guardian Beasts and the Three Kingdoms

Players choose one of the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, White Tiger, or Black Tortoise as their guardian animal. This is based on the Four Symbols from East Asian constellations. The game's land is geographically modeled on Korea's Three Kingdoms period, with three towns in each kingdom for a total of nine. In towns, you can rent a house for a fee and decorate the interior using different blueprints depending on its size.

Growth After the Level Cap

Another feature is that growth doesn't end even after reaching the level cap (99). Even after hitting max level, you can keep earning experience by hunting and convert it into permanent increases in stats such as health, mana, might, will, and grace.

Why It's a Classic

The World's First Commercial Graphical MMORPG

The Kingdom of the Winds introduced, very early on, a commercial online game where many people play together on a graphical screen. Its entry into the Guinness World Records in September 2010 as "the world's first commercial graphical MMORPG" recognized this historic position.

The First Korean Game to Launch Overseas

The Kingdom of the Winds was also the first Korean online game to launch an overseas service.

  • October 1997: English version launched for English-speaking players
  • May 1999: Commercial launch in the United States under the name "Nexus TK"
  • July 1999: Commercial launch in France
  • September 2000: Commercial launch in Japan
  • March 2002: Commercial launch in Indonesia

The French, Indonesian, and Japanese services later ended, but the US version, Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds, is still running today. Nexon stated that as of 2020, Nexus had 21 million cumulative registered users.

A Community Centered on People

English Wikipedia lists the features of Nexus as its 2D tile graphics, comic-like art style, and central storyline, along with active player participation. It explains that a close-knit community, where many players know one another, has been the force that has sustained the game for so long.

Changing with the Times

The Kingdom of the Winds was originally a subscription game, but it switched to a free-to-play model in August 2005. Around that time it recorded 130,000 concurrent users, and by July 2011 its cumulative membership had reached 18 million. It's an example of an old game surviving by adapting to the business models of the time.

Series and Influence

The biggest influence of The Kingdom of the Winds is the Korean online game industry itself. As the oldest game Nexon has run, it has been part of the company's history, and through Song Jae-kyung, who worked on its development, it led to Lineage and shaped a major current in Korean MMORPGs.

The game's historical value has also led to preservation efforts. In July 2013, the Nexon Computer Museum announced that it would restore the early version of The Kingdom of the Winds together with the original development staff. The goal was not just to revive the source code but to restore the feel and philosophy of the early version, and the restoration was completed and launched in May 2014. It's a rare domestic example of a game being treated and preserved as cultural heritage.

In addition, a The Kingdom of the Winds novel was published in December 2008.

How to Play Today

The Kingdom of the Winds is still in service 30 years later.

  • Korea: You can download and play it for free from Nexon's official The Kingdom of the Winds website. A 30th anniversary event was held in April 2026.
  • United States (English): If you'd like to play in English, you can use the official Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds website.

Today's The Kingdom of the Winds is very different from the 1996 version after 30 years of accumulated updates. Still, its backbone remains the same: the 2D tile screen, the Goguryeo world, the four classes, and the four guardian beasts. If you want to experience firsthand where Korean online games began, it's worth logging in at least once.
