Angry Birds is a puzzle game in which you launch angry birds from a slingshot to topple the structures where pigs are hiding. Because all you have to do is pull back and release with your finger, everyone from kids to adults could pick it up quickly, and it became one of the most famous games of the era when touchscreen smartphones first went mainstream.

In this post, we look at how Angry Birds was made by a small Finnish developer, how its basic rules and bird abilities work, why it's still called a classic, and how its influence extended to sequels, films, and even theme parks.

Origins

Rovio Entertainment is a Finnish company founded in 2003 by students at the Helsinki University of Technology. Before Angry Birds, it had already made 51 games, but most were work-for-hire projects commissioned by other companies such as Electronic Arts. As the company struggled, it decided to create intellectual property under its own name and began development in March 2009. Reportedly, the company had only enough money left to make one game at the time.

Out of many ideas, the one chosen was a drawing by designer Jaakko Iisalo. It showed wingless birds with furrowed brows attacking a structure. The gameplay hadn't been decided, but the team loved the characters. The gameplay was influenced by Crush the Castle, a puzzle game released the same year.

Testers who saw the first prototype didn't know what to do. The developers decided they needed a device anyone could recognize instantly, and brought back the slingshot, which they had once set aside as too obvious. Testers understood the slingshot right away without any explanation. Green pigs were chosen as the birds' enemies.

How It Plays

The player pulls back the on-screen slingshot with a finger to set the angle and power, then launches a bird. The pigs hide inside structures made of wood, glass, and stone, and you clear a level by eliminating all the pigs before using up the set number of birds.

  • Target weak points: Even without hitting a pig directly, knocking out pillars or supports makes the structure collapse onto the pigs.
  • Different abilities per bird: As you progress, birds with different abilities are added, such as one that splits into three mid-flight, one that speeds up, and one that explodes.
  • Three-star rating: The fewer birds you use to clear a level, the higher your score and star rating.
  • Golden eggs: Finding hidden golden eggs unlocks bonus stages.

At launch, the first episode, "Poached Eggs," had three chapters of 21 levels each, and free updates kept adding new episodes and birds afterward.

Spreading Across Devices

The first version came out for iPhone, iPod touch, and the Nokia N900, and in April 2010 an iPad-only "HD" version was released as well. The Android version, released that fall, was distributed as a free ad-supported app rather than a paid one, because paid Android apps couldn't be purchased in some countries. The Android version was downloaded more than 1 million times in its first 24 hours. In January 2011, a minis version for PSP and PS3 and a Windows version also came out. However, reviews were mixed on the non-touch controls.

Why It's a Classic

The biggest reason Angry Birds was loved is controls that fit the touchscreen perfectly. Pulling back and releasing the band with your finger feels similar to firing a real slingshot, so it needed almost no explanation. The developers refined the aiming so players could tell why they failed, and tuned the collapse of blocks many times to make it feel satisfying.

Each level is also short, and the result varies slightly every time. Even if you fire at the same angle, the structure falls differently, so you keep retrying to earn three stars.

The results were clear too. In February 2010 it hit No. 1 among paid apps on the UK App Store, and a few weeks later it reached No. 1 on the US App Store, holding the spot until October of that year. It spent a total of 275 days as the No. 1 paid app on Apple's App Store, considered the longest record in that category. By December 2010, one year after launch, it had passed 50 million downloads. It won the 2011 Webby Award for handheld games, and Angry Birds HD won "Casual Game of the Year" at the D.I.C.E. Awards, becoming the first mobile game nominated for "Game of the Year." In May 2026, it was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.

Series and Influence

The success of Angry Birds grew into Rovio's flagship franchise. Special editions such as Seasons, Rio, and Space were released, followed by the pig-centered spin-off Bad Piggies in 2012 and the official sequel Angry Birds 2 in 2015. Beyond puzzles, games in many genres were made, including racing, role-playing, and match puzzles.

It also expanded far beyond games. The animated series Angry Birds Toons began in 2013, The Angry Birds Movie was released in 2016, and a second film (The Angry Birds Movie 2) followed in 2019. A third film is in production, targeting a December 2026 release. Rovio was acquired by Sega in August 2023, and collaboration events with the Sonic series have been held since.

How to Play Today

The original Angry Birds was removed from the App Store and Google Play in 2019, along with several other early titles. After continued requests from fans, Rovio released "Rovio Classics: Angry Birds" in March 2022, a remake of the circa-2012 content built in the Unity engine. However, this version was also pulled from Google Play in February 2023, and on iOS it was renamed "Red's First Flight."

If you're starting fresh today, the easiest choice is a currently live title such as Angry Birds 2, which is updated regularly. Which titles are available may vary by region and time, so it's a good idea to check each store before downloading.
