Clash of Clans — The Mobile Strategy Game of Villages and Clans
How Supercell's Clash of Clans was made, its village, attack, and Clan War rules, why it's a classic, its spin-offs, and how to play it today.
Clash of Clans is a mobile strategy game in which you build and grow your own village while attacking other players' villages to steal their resources. More than a decade has passed since its 2012 release, but it's still being updated, so it's often cited as a prime example of a long-running mobile game.
In this post, we cover how Clash of Clans was made, how village building, attacks, and Clan Wars work, why it's considered a classic, and how it led to spin-offs like Clash Royale. At the end, we've also included a guide for those just starting out.

Origins
Supercell is a game company founded in Helsinki, Finland, in May 2010. Its first title was the browser game "Gunshine," after which it shifted to mobile games. Supercell is well known for its approach in which small teams of about five to seven people, called "cells," build a game from the idea up, put it through internal testing and a soft launch on the Canadian App Store, and release it worldwide only if the response is good. The farming game Hay Day and Clash of Clans, both released in 2012, were the titles that first made the company widely known.
Clash of Clans was developed over about six months, and reportedly its gameplay didn't change much during that time. Its references include web strategy games such as Backyard Monsters and Travian, and its art style was influenced by Super Famicom and arcade games. The art was originally more cartoony, but it was changed to its current look out of concern that it would seem too lightweight to strategy fans. For most of development it was multiplayer-only, but after focus testing, a single-player campaign of attacking goblin villages was added.
How It Plays
The player becomes the chief of a village and grows it from empty land.
- Resources: You build and upgrade buildings with gold and elixir. From Town Hall 7, dark elixir unlocks, letting you strengthen heroes and special units. Gems are a premium currency and can also be earned by completing achievements.
- Town Hall and Builders: Raising your Town Hall level unlocks stronger buildings and higher levels. Every construction and upgrade requires an idle builder.
- Defense: You protect your village with defenses such as cannons, mortars, archer towers, wizard towers, and inferno towers, along with traps and walls.
- Attack: You attack other players' villages by combining units such as Barbarians, Archers, Giants, and Hog Riders with spells. Attacks last up to three minutes, and you earn one star each for destroying 50% or more of the base, destroying the Town Hall, and destroying the entire village.
Clans and Clan Wars
As the name says, the heart of this game is the "clan." Up to 50 players gather in a clan to donate units to one another and chat. In Clan Wars, where clans face off, there's one preparation day and one battle day, and each member attacks twice, with the total stars deciding the winner. In 2018, Clan War Leagues were added, in which multiple clans compete in a league format.
In addition, the "Builder Base," where you build a second village on another island, was added in 2017, and later "Clan Capital," which clan members build together. In 2022 unit training costs were removed, and in March 2025 unit training times and hero recovery times were removed, greatly reducing waiting.
Why It's a Classic
Clash of Clans scored 74 on Metacritic, so its critic scores weren't especially high. Even so, there are a few reasons it has long been regarded as a classic.
First, both attack and defense depend on the player's thinking. Deciding which units to drop where, and how to lay out your village to repel opponents' attacks, creates strategic depth beyond a simple numbers race. Critics also praised the fact that it can be played in short sessions yet requires real strategy.
Second, the community of the clan kept people around for a long time. Rather than a solo game, the experience of preparing for war with friends or colleagues and talking about the results led to long-term play.
Third, its commercial results were enormous. It ranked No. 1 in revenue on Google Play in 2013, and in 2015 it was No. 1 in revenue on both the App Store and Google Play. The acquisition of an 81.4% stake in Supercell by a Tencent-led consortium in 2016 also came against the backdrop of this success. On the other hand, criticism that its structure pushes players hard toward buying gems has persisted since its early days.
Series and Influence
The world of Clash of Clans carried over into other Supercell games. The most notable is Clash Royale, a real-time battle game released in 2016. In 2021, Clash Quest, Clash Mini, and Clash Heroes were announced together, but development of all three was discontinued.
Its marketing also made headlines. In 2015 it aired an ad featuring actor Liam Neeson during the US Super Bowl broadcast, and from 2016 it released the YouTube animated series "Clash-A-Rama!" In May 2025, a Netflix animated series was announced.
Looking at the industry as a whole, Clash of Clans popularized the template of mobile strategy games where you grow a village, attack other players, and cooperate with a clan. It's also frequently cited as a success story of the "live service" approach, growing a game through regular updates years after launch.
How to Play Today
Clash of Clans is free to download on the iOS App Store and Google Play, and since 2023 it can also be played on Windows. At first, it's a good idea to learn unit characteristics through the single-player campaign of attacking goblin villages, and to build up your defenses and walls evenly rather than rushing your Town Hall. Once you're comfortable, join an active clan, receive donated units, and take part in Clan Wars. That's where the game's fun shines brightest.
